Adriana ​Herrera is a combination personal shopper and spiritual guru. She knows that conscientious fashionistas don’t want stereotypical eco-fashions like hemp pullovers and earth-toned mumus. She also knows they do want sky-high heels and smoking-hot fabrics, but not if an eight-year-old child made them, and not if a lake was dyed pink in the process.   

Working with Adriana, co-founder Kevin Ball merged his love of social change with his web development skills, and created the online shopping experience that is Fashioning Change. Together, Adriana and Kevin make it easy for shoppers to choose clothing that’s made in earth-friendly, ethical ways. As conscience driven consumers demand more transparency from everything from their food to their furniture, the world of fashion remains a dark, uncharted frontier. “I grew up with adversity and was taught when you have a problem you find a solution,” says Herrera. “When I encounter a problem I tackle it head on with no fear or regrets.” Through the website's signature Wear This, Not That™ section, carefully curated “Do Good Alternatives” are suggested in place of popular brands with questionable manufacturing practices like Nike, Calvin Klein, and the Gap.  Each recommended brand is clear about its supply chain, and has adopted what Adriana calls “authentic practices that protect the Earth and human rights.” 

Fashioning Change’s website design makes each shopper’s experience personal. The picture-saturated interface is based on a tool for teaching autistic children called the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) that Adriana used while employed as a behavioral counselor. The interface helps people find brands that match their style and their ethics. It’s fun to use and helps consumers learn the stories behind the brands, so they know exactly what kind of business is taking the money from their impeccably-tailored, silk-lined pockets.
